Beaver-Island is an island located in the upper part of Lake Michigan, approximately 32 miles due north of Charlevoix and 110 miles from Sault Ste. Marie. You can reach the island by ferry or by plane. This beautiful and remote island has a year-round population of around 600 - a large percentage of whom are of Irish descent. Due largely in part to the isolation of the island, the independence and traditions of the people and their respect for nature - time on the island seems to slow down. Beaver Island offers a peaceful place to relax and unwind and enjoy nature. It is 6 x 13 miles in size with seven inland lakes, bike and boat rentals, general stores, gift shops, art galleries, cabins, vacation homes and restaurants. There are two airports, two marinas and a lovely harbor on Beaver Island and also two lighthouses. Recreational activities include hiking and biking, camping, fishing, kayaking, scuba diving (to view shipwrecks!), explore over 100 miles of scenic roads, birdwatching and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. There is a ferry service to the island from downtown Charlevoix and a flight service from the Charlevoix City Airport. There are excellent marine and aviation facilities on both Beaver Island and in Charlevoix, so you are also welcome to arrive via private plane or boat.

Beaver Island Weather & Climate

The Keweenaw Peninsula  on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is a long finger of land poking into Lake Superior. It is a rugged wilderness area that is one of the most remote regions in the Midwest. The climate is greatly influenced by Lake Superior, as well as cold, dry air coming from the Arctic region. Severe winters are commonplace. The Lake acts as a giant humidifier, increasing the moisture content of the air throughout the year. In the winter, this moisture condenses when it reaches the land, creating heavy snowfall in some areas. Average snowfall for this area is 177 days per year. In summer, the lake breezes have a cooling effect on the climate, keeping it from becoming too hot and uncomfortable. Summer humidity is rarely a problem due to the cooler temperatures.
