Kalamazoo
is located in the southwest region of the state, along the banks of the Kalamazoo River, south of Grand Rapids. The town's interesting name is from the Potawatomi Indians and means "the rapids at the river crossing." The city of Kalamazoo is situated at the crossroads of U.S. 131 and Interstate 94 and is the fifth largest metropolitan area in Michigan, with a population of approximately 228,000. It's considered a major educational city, home to Kalamazoo College and Western Michigan University. The city's downtown area contains Bronson Park, which includes an Indian mound and sculpture and other city attractions include Frank Lloyd Wright's Parkwyn Village, Milham Park and a Farmer's Market on Bank Street. Surrounded by rolling hills and clear lakes and streams, Kalamazoo offers visitors a wide range of recreational activities from fishing to skiing. The city has 22 golf courses, 83 lakes with public access, and close proximity to three ski resorts. In addition, Kalamazoo has a vibrant Art Deco downtown area, historical sites, museums, a world-class convention hotel and fine dining and shopping. Southwest Michigan has a distinct four-season climate that is typical of most of the Midwest, except that it experiences some lake effect conditions due to the close proximity of Lake Michigan. Summer precipitation comes in the form of showers and thunderstorms. Lake Michigan acts as a giant "heat sink," which helps moderate the temperatures of the surrounding land, cooling summers and warming winters. It is also a natural humidifier, and this causes an increase in the moisture content in the air, creating heavier snowfalls in the winter. However, seldom are there prolonged periods of extreme heat combined with humidity in southwestern Michigan. Average annual snowfall is 36 inches, but varies greatly from year to year. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
