Manistee
is located on the shores of Lake Michigan in the northern region of the state, along the banks of the Manistee River and near Manistee Lake. This early mill town was completely destroyed by fire in 1871, but was rebuilt and quickly grew to become an area popular with retirees and tourists. The town of Manistee is called "The Victorian Port City," due to its' many, beautifully preserved, turn-of-the-century downtown buildings. The Manistee River, which is spanned by two bascule bridges, runs through the middle of the city, and a new boardwalk along the waterfront provides a picturesque place for a stroll, or to sit and watch the boats on the water. Adjacent to the river walk are public boat ramps, golf courses, pier and surf fishing, tennis courts and Lighthouse Park. Manistee's downtown area has lots of unique specialty shops, antique shops and restaurants, and the Little River Casino is located just five miles north of town. Narrated, historical tours and sunset lighthouse tours are available from Manistee, and scenic airplane rides depart from the Manistee Airport and fly over Lake Michigan and Manistee or Portage Lake. Manistee is also home to an annual Summer Art Fair, usually held in Red Szymarek Park along Lake Michigan.

Manistee Weather & Climate

The lake effect is quite strong on the northwest area of Lower Michigan near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park. This area has a distinct four-season climate, although Lake Michigan helps modify temperatures, keeping them cooler in late spring and early summer, and warmer during late fall and winter. Showers and thunderstorms are common in spring and summer, and precipitation is generally evenly distributed during the crop season of April through September, receiving an average of 17.45 inches of rain during that time. The lake also acts as a giant humidifier, increasing moisture content in the air throughout the year. However, extremely hot and humid summer days are not that common and don't last long in this part of the state. Snowfall varies greatly from season to season.
