Oscoda
is located along US Highway 23, 15 miles from Tawas City and East Tawas on the banks of the AuSable River. This summer resort town's population grows each summer as vacationers come up to enjoy both the nearby inland lakes and Lake Huron's wonderful sandy beaches. More than twenty miles of pristine beach are located along Lake Huron's shores and even more beaches along the AuSable River, Cedar Lake and Van Ettan Lake, with opportunities for almost every kind of water sport imaginable. Charter boats leave from marinas around the mouth of the AuSable River to fish in Lake Huron for salmon and trout. River Road, which runs parallel with the beautiful AuSable River has been designated a National Scenic Byway and has some of the most breathtaking scenery in Michigan. There are countless trails for hiking and biking, and some 130 miles of scenic, groomed cross-country ski trails in wintertime. Along U.S. 23 approximately three miles north of Oscoda is Three Mile Beach Park. This is a rather unique roadside park that not only includes a wonderful sandy beach, but is popular with birders who head here to watch migrating waterfowl. Wildflowers are also prevalent among the beach sands. Oscoda is home to several special events throughout the year, including "Art on the Beach," "Paul Bunyan Days," "Gagaguwon Traditional Pow Wow," and "Old Orchard Park Concert Series."

The Northeastern portion of Michigan's Lower Peninsula has a climate that is directly affected by the prevailing westerly winds which are modified according to the temperature and moisture content in the air as they pass over Lake Michigan. During the winter, cloud cover produced by this "lake effect" prevents the loss of heat; therefore the temperatures for this part of Michigan is somewhat warmer than would otherwise occur at this latitude. Likewise, winds moving over the waters of the Lakes in summer keeps it cooler. Average temperatures are generally warmer along the shoreline of Lake Huron for two reasons; the vast inland forests provide insulation during the summer and the Lake serves as a heat source in the winter along the shore. Rain is heaviest in northeastern Michigan during the growing season of April through September. Snowfall has wide variations from winter to winter.
