Atlanta
is the county seat of Montmorency County, located on the Thunder Bay River in the northeast region of the state's Lower Peninsula. The town's motto is "Elk Capital of Michigan," due to the large herds of Michigan Elk that roam the area (five to six hundred strong.) The Atlanta Elk Festival is held here each year during the last full weekend in September. The region surrounding Atlanta is very popular for hunting and fishing, with at least eleven excellent fishing lakes in the area. The town got its' name from one of the first settlers, a Civil War veteran who said the area reminded him of Atlanta, Georgia, which he saw when fighting in the war. As part of Montmorency County, Atlanta is in one of the most pristine and remote areas of Michigan. The Briley Township Recreation Area is located along the river in downtown Atlanta, and provides picnic areas, a pavilion, gazebo, and an ice skating rink and recreation hall. Several miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails are found north of Atlanta at the end of Pettenger Road (no motorized vehicles or hunting is allowed on the trails.) Other recreational sites near the town of Atlanta include Clear Lake, just north of town, the Thunder Bay River State Forest and Twin Lake. Atlanta is approximately a three and a half-hour drive from Detroit, Ann Arbor or Grand Rapids.

The Great Lakes dominate northern Michigan's four seasons of weather. What is known as "lake effect snow squalls" bring locally heavy snow to northern and western Michigan in winter, with the southwest receiving much less snow. Summers tend to be sunny as the cool water of the Lakes chills the air near the Earth's surface, producing a stable atmosphere. Autumn is too cool for swimming, but is a great time for other outdoor attractions. The luminous phenomenon known as the Northern Lights is usually visible from northern Michigan 30 nights per year, most commonly in March, April, September and October. Michigan is located on the northeast fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but has a lower occurrence of them, in part, as a result of the colder water of Lake Michigan during the spring and early summer months.
