Clare
is located just northeast of center in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. It's the largest city in Clare County, whose slogan is "Where the North Begins." With it's abundant forestland and many lakes and streams, Clare is prime land for hunting and fishing. It's a favorite stopping point for those visiting the Tobacco River and the other resort areas of Lake George and Lake Station. The lakes are dotted with summer cottages, and are great for swimming, boating and other water sports. The area surrounding Clare has some of Michigan's top golf courses and thousands of acres of state land and parks offers abundant hiking and biking trails, horseback riding, canoeing, kayaking, camping, all terrain vehicle trails and snowmobile trails in winter. If sightseeing, rather than sports, is your thing, spend the day in peaceful Amish Country and scouting out the area's many antique shops and gift stores. Not just in summer, but every season is beautiful in Clare. In autumn, the forests explode with color, and winter turns the hills and trails into a winter wonderland. Clare has a strong Irish background, and celebrates with a special St. Patrick's Day event every March. There are many other special events throughout the year in the area, including the Clare Annual City Wide Garage Sale and Summerfest Celebration usually held the first week of July.

Four distinct seasons with a lake effect that is quite strong during much of the year describes the climate of the northern region of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The lake effect increases cloudiness during late fall and winter, and also modifies the temperatures - keeping them cooler in the summer. Michigan sees a lot of moisture throughout the year. In winter, the humidity from the lake condenses as snow when it reaches land, creating quite heavy snowfalls in some areas. Also, during the winter, the temperature continues to drop, and ice sometimes covers portions of the lakes. Summers are warm, but periods of extreme heat and humidity are infrequent. Showers and thunderstorms are common in the spring and summer and early fall is often the driest, sunniest time of the year in Michigan.
