Bear-Lake
Village is primarily a retirement and tourist community, named for the bear-shaped lake situated in the northwest corner of Bear Lake Township. The town dates back to 1863, and sits on the borders of Bear Lake in a scenic, hilly area of the state that features farms and small orchards, and several smaller lakes. Bear Lake is known for its Bass and Walleye fishing, and several rivers in the area are full of trout and salmon. This peaceful, 1800-acre lake is also a perfect spot for swimming, hiking, horseback riding and golf. Fall is an especially beautiful time on at Bear Lake, when the surrounding hills are ablaze with color. Wintertime brings ice fishing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling. Bear Lake Days is an annual celebration that is usually held the second weekend of July, and in August, a Community Yard Sale and Farmer's Market draws hundreds. Bear Lake is easily reached along US 31, and is conveniently located near Lake Michigan's most scenic beaches. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park is 30 minutes to the north, and the Little River Casino is a short drive south. Other nearby towns include Frankfort, Manistee, and Traverse City.

The lake effect is quite strong on the northwest area of Lower Michigan near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park. This area has a distinct four-season climate, although Lake Michigan helps modify temperatures, keeping them cooler in late spring and early summer, and warmer during late fall and winter. Showers and thunderstorms are common in spring and summer, and precipitation is generally evenly distributed during the crop season of April through September, receiving an average of 17.45 inches of rain during that time. The lake also acts as a giant humidifier, increasing moisture content in the air throughout the year. However, extremely hot and humid summer days are not that common and don't last long in this part of the state. Snowfall varies greatly from season to season.
