Alpena
is a pretty town that overlooks Lake Huron's Thunder Bay in the northern region of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Located on what is commonly referred to as "Sunrise Shoreline," Alpena is quiet and friendly with a laid-back, charming atmosphere and many beautifully preserved houses and buildings from the turn of the century. It has a convenient downtown shopping area that is situated near the marina, and an "Old Town" just north of Thunder Bay River. Fishing is popular in Alpena, not just in summer, but ice fishing in winter, as well. Other activities in town include skiing, sledding, ice-skating and snowmobiling; golf, boating, hiking and biking. Alpena is home to a lighthouse, a small structure affectionately called "Lil' Red," and best viewed from the transient docks at Alpena's City Harbor. Other attractions in town include the Jesse Besser Museum. The grounds of this museum contain several restored nineteenth-century buildings, including a one-room schoolhouse and a homesteader's cabin, plus rotating exhibits in three galleries, a recreation of an 1890s street and a planetarium. There are several good restaurants in Alpena, along with plenty of shopping opportunities. Lodging in the area is plentiful, as well, ranging from hotels and motels, lakeside cabins, cottages and inns and camping.

Northeast Michigan, on the Lower Peninsula, experiences four distinct seasons. During periods of easterly to northeasterly winds, the air moving over Lake Huron gives this region cooler summers and increased snow activity in late fall and early winter. As a result of prevailing westerly winds, the northeast region also experiences additional lake affect. In late winter, ice builds up on the lakes and temperature variations more closely resemble inland Michigan. This area seldom experiences prolonged periods of hot, humid weather in the summer or extreme cold during the winter. Annually, thunderstorms occur on an average of 24 days per year - mainly on summer afternoons. Michigan is located on the northeast fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but has a lower occurrence of them, in part, as a result of the colder water of Lake Michigan during the spring and early summer months.
