Shelby
is the name of a village located within Shelby Township in Oceana County, Michigan, which is located along the state's western coastline, about halfway up the state. The population of the township at the 2000 census was 3,951 residents. Established as Churchill's Corners in 1866 after the first postmaster, the name of the village was changed to Shelby in 1885 - after General Isaac Shelby who was a famous general of the War of 1812. Shelby is a peaceful, small town that is easily accessed from U.S. Route 31, which runs a mile west of the town. The local economy is supported mainly from tourism, with many local stores and businesses located in a newly formed industrial park located north of town. The town of Shelby is also situated in the heart of a rich agricultural belt, known especially for its apples. As part of Oceana County, Shelby is located along the popular Hart-to-Montague Bicycle Trail and is near the Manistee National Forest. Pentwater is a major summer resort located in the area, along with Little Sauble Point and Silver Lake. The White River is also very popular for canoeing and fishing. So if you're looking for a quiet place to stay away from the crowds and noise in the middle of western Michigan's recreational oasis, Shelby is a perfect choice.

West-Southwest Michigan on the Lower Peninsula has four seasons where summers are warm with cool nights and winters are cold with snow. Lake Michigan helps modify temperatures, keeping them cooler in late spring and early summer and warmer during late fall and winter than in other parts of the Midwest. Showers and thunderstorms are common in spring and summer, and precipitation is generally evenly distributed during the crop season of April through September. The lake also acts as a giant humidifier, increasing moisture content in the air throughout the year. However, extremely hot and humid summer days are not that common and don't last long in this part of the state. Snowfall varies greatly from winter to winter.
