East-Tawas
is a coastal town in the northeastern portion of Lower Michigan. What started as a lumber town in the mid 1800s is now a major resort area overlooking Tawas Bay and has a public beach, pier and community center. Activities in or around East Tawas include hiking, biking, fishing, swimming, sailing, canoeing and all sorts of other water sports. Cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and sledding are popular in the wintertime. East Tawas City Park has a picturesque white, sandy beach with a gazebo and trails for hiking, jogging or taking a leisurely stroll. The park leads to Tawas Bay Refuge Harbor where you can get a good look at the Tawas Point Lighthouse that sits across the Bay at Tawas State Park. Tawas State Park itself is on a sandy peninsula that separates Tawas Bay from Lake Huron. It has a beautiful two-mile beach that also offers swimming, boating, sailing and fishing. A boat launch is just outside the park and there is a modern campground and cabins available for rent inside the park. The nearby Huron National Forest and AuSable River also offer lots of recreational opportunities. The town of East Tawas has charming downtown streets and is known statewide for its unique shops and restaurants.

The Northeastern portion of Michigan's Lower Peninsula has a climate that is directly affected by the prevailing westerly winds which are modified according to the temperature and moisture content in the air as they pass over Lake Michigan. During the winter, cloud cover produced by this "lake effect" prevents the loss of heat; therefore the temperatures for this part of Michigan is somewhat warmer than would otherwise occur at this latitude. Likewise, winds moving over the waters of the Lakes in summer keeps it cooler. Average temperatures are generally warmer along the shoreline of Lake Huron for two reasons; the vast inland forests provide insulation during the summer and the Lake serves as a heat source in the winter along the shore. Rain is heaviest in northeastern Michigan during the growing season of April through September. Snowfall has wide variations from winter to winter.
